Aonang Elephant Park
Ao Nang — an ethical elephant experience: bathe, wash and feed the elephants. No riding.
About this trip
Aonang Elephant Park sits at Ao Nang in Krabi, a few minutes from the beach strip where most visitors to the province are staying. It is a no riding elephant experience built around bathing, washing and feeding the elephants, and the priced session is a 30 minute block of bathing and care. Nobody climbs on an elephant here. The idea is much simpler than a full day excursion: you go and help look after the animals for half an hour, get thoroughly wet doing it, and come back.
What the day looks like
The park is open every day from 08:00 to 17:00 and the timing is flexible rather than fixed to one departure, so you choose a slot that fits your day rather than building your day around the trip. Hotel transfer is included, so the visit starts with a pickup from where you are staying. Given the location at Ao Nang, the drive is short for most beachfront hotels.
On arrival you are shown how the session works and what to expect around the animals. This is the part to pay attention to. An elephant is far bigger and quicker than it looks in photographs, and a calm session depends on visitors knowing where to stand, how to offer food and when to back off. Staff run the interactions and stay with you.
The session itself covers three things: bathing, washing and feeding. Feeding is the closest and quietest contact, and it is a good way to start, since offering food is how the animals get comfortable with a new group of people. The bathing and washing is the part everyone remembers. You are in the water with the elephants, scrubbing them down, and an Asian elephant enjoying a wash is a large, deliberate and very wet animal to be standing next to. Expect to be soaked. That is not an accident of the format, it is the format.
Because the session runs to 30 minutes of bathing and care, it is short and concentrated rather than a slow half day. Drinking water is provided and insurance is included. The exact running order on the day is set by the keepers according to the elephants and the weather, which is normal and generally a good sign.
Who this trip suits
This one suits people staying in or near Ao Nang who want elephant contact without committing a whole day, and it works particularly well for families. Bathing and feeding require no fitness and no experience, and children generally take to the washing far more readily than adults do. A child rate is available, so tell us the ages in your group and we will confirm the rate.
It also suits travelers who are uneasy about elephant tourism. A no riding format where the visit consists of feeding and washing asks very little of the animals, and 30 minutes is a short window rather than an all day performance.
It is less suitable if you want a long, immersive program, in which case a half day sanctuary visit gives you more time on site. It is also not the trip for you if you would rather not get wet, because getting wet is the entire point.
What to bring
Swimwear or clothes you are happy to soak, plus a full change of dry clothes for afterward. Sandals or shoes with grip that can go in water are better than flip flops on wet ground. Bring a towel, sunscreen and a hat. If you want photographs, bring a waterproof phone case or a dry bag, because a normal phone in your hand during the washing section is a phone at risk. Drinking water is provided.
Good to know
Krabi's high season runs roughly from November to April, the drier and more settled stretch of the year. From May to October the monsoon brings heavier rain and muddier ground. For this particular trip that matters less than usual, since you are getting wet regardless, though the ground around the bathing area is softer in the wet months.
The park is open daily from 08:00 to 17:00. Hotel transfer, drinking water and insurance are included in the price. The park is at Ao Nang in Krabi and lists licence number 32/00863. Confirm your pickup time and hotel with us when you book, since transfers are arranged per booking.
