The Elephant Tracking Experience is a short guided walk on a jungle trail in Krabi, inland from Ao Nang, looking for elephants in forest terrain. It runs for 30 to 60 minutes and it is a wildlife experience and a nature walk rather than a full day out. A guide goes with you and insurance is included. Sightings are not guaranteed, which is worth knowing before you book, because that is the honest nature of tracking anything in a forest.

What the day looks like

There is one location, the jungle trail, and the programme takes place entirely on foot there. It lasts between 30 and 60 minutes depending on how the walk goes on the day.

You meet your guide at the trail, who explains how the walk works and what the ground rules are. This is the part worth listening to. Elephants are very large animals and the guide decides how close the group goes, where you stand and when to stop, and those decisions are not up for negotiation on the trail.

From there you walk the forest trail. The guide leads, reads the ground, and points out what is there to be seen. Tracking is mostly walking and looking rather than a sequence of arranged moments, and a good guide will show you the signs as much as the animals: what has been eaten, what has been pushed through, where the ground has been disturbed. Jungle terrain in Krabi is uneven and often damp, and the pace is a walking pace rather than a hike.

If elephants are found, the time is spent observing them with the guide setting the distance. The programme is built around seeing the animals in forest surroundings rather than around a set activity.

Beyond a guided walk on a jungle trail with a guide and insurance included, this is a short programme without a long list of components attached to it, and we do not want to describe things that are not part of it. Who this trip suits

This suits people who want to see elephants in a forest setting and who are content with a short programme. At 30 to 60 minutes it fits easily into a half day alongside something else, and it works on an arrival or departure day when there is no time for a full excursion.

It suits walkers more than sitters. You are on your feet on a jungle trail for the duration, and while it is not a demanding hike, it is not a sit down visit either.

It does not suit anyone who needs a guarantee. Wildlife sightings are not guaranteed on this programme, and if seeing elephants is the whole reason for your day, our elephant sanctuary programmes are the better choice, since those are built around scheduled time with the animals rather than around finding them.

What to bring

Comfortable walking shoes are the one thing specified, and they matter on a forest trail. Bring insect repellent, since a jungle at walking pace is where you notice mosquitoes most. Light long sleeves are useful for both sun and insects. Bring drinking water, sunscreen and a hat. A camera is worth having, though keep in mind that you may not get the picture you came for.

Good to know

Krabi high season runs roughly from November to April, when the weather is drier and the trails are firmer. During the monsoon, from May to October, the forest is wetter and the ground softer, so shoes with grip matter more.
