Ethical Elephant Time

Elephant Sanctuary Tours in Krabi

Krabi is one of the easiest places in Thailand to spend a morning with elephants without ever sitting on one. Every program on this page is a no riding program: you prepare the food, hand feed the herd, walk beside the animals and, on most options, end up in the mud and the river with them. There is no trekking seat, no chair and no saddle on any trip we sell.

The elephant experiences around Krabi split into three kinds, and they suit quite different mornings.

Krabi Elephant Sanctuary, the longer visit

The sanctuary programs are the ones most people mean when they search for a Krabi elephant sanctuary. The short version runs about 1.5 hours at ฿900 per adult and ฿700 per child (child pricing covers ages 4 to 11), and includes elephant feeding, an English speaking guide and insurance. You prepare bananas and sugar cane, hand feed the herd, and spend the rest of the session walking with the elephants and watching them bathe.

The half day program is ฿2,300 per adult and ฿2,000 per child, and it is the option to pick if you want unhurried time rather than a quick stop. It adds hotel transfer to the same feeding and care routine, and stretches the visit out so the herd sets the pace instead of a clock.

Aonang Elephant Park, the closest and quickest

If you are staying on Ao Nang beach and want elephants without losing a whole morning, Aonang Elephant Park is ten minutes inland. A 30 minute bathe, wash and feed session is ฿1,300 per adult and ฿1,200 per child, and the park is open daily from 08:00 to 17:00. Hotel transfer, drinking water and insurance are included. The park operates under Thai licence 32/00863, which is worth knowing if licensing matters to you when you choose an operator.

This is the most hands on of the options and the messiest. Thirty minutes sounds short, but it is thirty minutes actually in the water with the animals rather than thirty minutes of standing and watching.

Elephant Tracking, for walkers

The Elephant Tracking Experience is ฿700 per adult and ฿500 per child, the cheapest way to see elephants from Krabi, and the most different in character. It is a guided nature walk in the Krabi jungle with a guide and insurance included, rather than a bathing and feeding session at a park. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Wildlife sightings on a tracking walk are never guaranteed, so treat this as a jungle walk that may include elephants rather than a booked encounter with them.

What to wear and bring

Bring clothes and footwear you do not mind ruining, plus a full change for afterwards. The mud pit is the point of the bathing programs, and the elephants decide how thoroughly everyone gets covered. Sunscreen, insect repellent and a camera are worth packing. Do not bring anything that cannot survive being dropped in a river.

Which one to book

Choose the half day sanctuary program if elephants are the reason you came to Krabi and you want the longest time with them. Choose Aonang Elephant Park if you are short on time, staying in Ao Nang, or travelling with children who will lose interest before a half day ends. Choose the 1.5 hour sanctuary visit as the middle option, and Elephant Tracking if you would rather walk in the jungle than stand in a mud pit.

One practical difference worth checking before you book: hotel transfer is included on the half day sanctuary program and at Aonang Elephant Park, but not on the 1.5 hour sanctuary visit or the tracking walk. Ask us on WhatsApp and we will tell you what getting there costs from your hotel.

What a no riding policy actually means

Elephant riding is still widely sold in Thailand, and the distinction matters. Carrying people in a chair for hours puts sustained load on an elephant's spine, which is not built for it the way a horse's is. The programs on this page replace that with feeding, washing and walking, which the animals can opt out of and which do not require the training used to make an elephant accept a rider.

We will not book you a trekking seat, and if that is what you are looking for we are the wrong operator. Sanctuary programs are weather dependent, so a heavy storm can move or shorten a session.

When to go

Morning slots are the most comfortable for the elephants and for you, since the mud and river time lands before the heat peaks. The programs run year round. During the May to October monsoon months an afternoon downpour is more likely to interrupt a session, so an early booking is the safer choice in the wet season.

Tell us your dates, your group and where you are staying on WhatsApp, and we will match you to the program that fits.

FAQ

How much does a Krabi elephant sanctuary visit cost?
The 1.5 hour Krabi Elephant Sanctuary program is ฿900 per adult and ฿700 per child, and the half day program is ฿2,300 per adult and ฿2,000 per child. A 30 minute bathe, wash and feed session at Aonang Elephant Park is ฿1,300 per adult and ฿1,200 per child. The Elephant Tracking jungle walk is the cheapest option at ฿700 per adult and ฿500 per child. Child pricing on the sanctuary programs covers ages 4 to 11.
Do you ride the elephants on any of these tours?
No. Every elephant program on this page is a no riding program. You prepare food, hand feed the herd, walk beside the animals and, on the bathing programs, wash them in the mud and the river. We do not sell trekking seats, and there is no chair or saddle on any trip listed here.
What is the difference between the sanctuary and Aonang Elephant Park?
Aonang Elephant Park is ten minutes inland from Ao Nang beach and runs a 30 minute bathe, wash and feed session, open daily 08:00 to 17:00, under Thai licence 32/00863. The Krabi Elephant Sanctuary programs are longer, either 1.5 hours or a half day, and put more time into food preparation, feeding and walking with the herd. Pick the park for speed and convenience, the sanctuary for time.
Is hotel pickup included?
It depends on the program. Hotel transfer is included on the half day sanctuary program and at Aonang Elephant Park. It is not included on the 1.5 hour sanctuary visit or on the Elephant Tracking walk. Message us with your hotel and we will confirm what transfer costs for the program you want.
What should I wear and bring?
Clothes and footwear you do not mind getting muddy and wet, plus a complete change for afterwards. Add sunscreen, insect repellent and a camera. The bathing programs put you in a mud pit and then a river, so nothing you bring should be valuable or fragile. For the Elephant Tracking walk, comfortable walking shoes matter more than anything else.
Are the elephant programs suitable for children?
Yes. The sanctuary programs price children ages 4 to 11 separately, at ฿700 for the 1.5 hour visit and ฿2,000 for the half day, and Aonang Elephant Park charges ฿1,200 per child. For younger children or a short attention span, the 30 minute session at Aonang Elephant Park is usually the easier choice than a half day.
Will I definitely see elephants on the tracking walk?
No. Elephant Tracking is a guided jungle walk, and wildlife sightings are not guaranteed on it. If seeing and touching elephants is the point of your morning, book one of the sanctuary programs or Aonang Elephant Park instead, where the herd is on site.
What happens if it rains?
The sanctuary programs are weather dependent and a storm can shorten or move a session. The programs run all year, but an afternoon downpour is more likely during the May to October monsoon months, so a morning slot is the safer booking in the wet season.
