7 Islands Sunset + BBQ + Bioluminescent Plankton

About this trip

Seven stops and a barbecue on the beach. That is the short version of the 7 Islands Sunset, BBQ and Bioluminescent Plankton trip, and it is a fair one. Where most Krabi island days give you four islands and a lunch stop, this one strings together seven separate points along the coast off Ao Nang and Railay, and it builds the evening around a Thai-style buffet dinner with BBQ served on the sand at Poda Island as the sun goes down. It runs 14:00 to 19:30, about six hours, and it takes most of the day without taking all of it. You can do it by longtail, speedboat or catamaran.

What the day looks like

Departure is at 14:00. The program is subject to change based on sea conditions, so the order can move.

Phra Nang Cave Beach is a sightseeing stop, known for its carved wooden shrine set at the cave. It is a place to look rather than a long swim.

Chicken Island is named for the limestone formation at one end and is one of the trip's snorkeling spots, with equipment and life jackets provided.

Tup Island and Mor Island are connected to each other by a sandbar. Tup's sandbar also links out towards its other neighbors, and walking between islands on a strip of sand with clear water on both sides is the part of the afternoon most people photograph.

Tang Ming Island is an important snorkeling spot and is visible from Poda, so the two sit naturally together in the route.

Poda Island is where the evening happens. It is a white sand beach well suited to watching the sunset, and it is where dinner is served. The buffet is Thai-style with BBQ, and seasonal fruits and drinking water come with it. Eating on the sand while the light drops over the islands is the center of this trip rather than an afterthought at the end of it.

After dark the boat moves to Ao Duead, a bioluminescent plankton viewing area near Railay Bay, where glowing plankton can be seen in the sea at night when conditions allow. You are back by around 19:30.

Who this trip suits

This suits people who want a lot of coastline in one outing and who like the idea of dinner outdoors on an island rather than a restaurant. It is a good fit if your morning is already committed, since it does not start until 14:00. Couples do it for the sunset and the dinner. Groups of friends do it for the route. Families come too, and children aged four to eleven have their own price on each boat, though the plankton swim asks for children who are genuinely at ease in the water after dark. What to bring

Swimwear under your clothes and a towel. A dry change of clothes for the ride back, plus a light layer, since you will be wet after dark and the air moves once the boat is going. A hat, sunglasses and reef-safe sunscreen for the afternoon half. Sandals or water shoes for the sandbar and the rocky edges. A dry bag for your phone. Hotel pick-up and drop-off, drinking water, seasonal fruits, the buffet dinner with BBQ, snorkeling equipment, life jackets, a professional English-speaking guide and basic accident insurance are all included. Bring cash for park fees, which are not included.

Good to know

Bioluminescent plankton visibility depends on weather, moon phase and tide conditions. That is three variables none of which we control, so we will not tell you a display is certain. Darker nights are better than bright ones. If the plankton are the main draw for you, say so when you book and we will talk through your dates honestly.

The program is subject to change based on sea conditions, and that carries more weight on an evening trip than a morning one.

Roughly November to April brings the calmest, clearest water on this coast; May to October is the monsoon and evenings are more variable.

There are three ways to travel. The longtail boat is the traditional open-air classic. The speedboat is faster and covered, which buys more island time. The catamaran has a spacious sunset deck and is the relaxed, premium option. Hotel pick-up and drop-off is included whichever you choose, and we agree your pickup time with you directly rather than working to a fixed published window.

The national park entrance fee on the 7 Islands route is not included in the tour price. It is ฿200 per adult and ฿100 per child aged 4 to 11, charged per person.
