Bioluminescent Plankton Tours in Krabi

When the sun drops behind the limestone islands off Krabi, a handful of boats head back out into the dark. The draw is bioluminescent plankton: tiny organisms in the Andaman Sea that flash blue-green light when the water around them is disturbed, so a paddle, a hand or a fin trailing through the shallows can leave a trail of glowing light behind it.

It only shows up under the right conditions. Darker water helps the glow stand out, so the days around the new moon give the clearest view, while a bright full moon can wash it out almost completely. Wind, rain and cloud cover also change how strong the plankton bloom is on any given night, so no operator, including us, can promise a sighting on a set date. What we can promise is the rest of the evening: a boat out to the islands while the light is still gold, a swim or snorkel stop while the sun goes down, and dinner served on board or on a beach before the return trip in the dark.
