Hong Islands Sunset + Bioluminescent Planktons

About this trip

Almost everyone sees the Hong Islands in the morning. This trip waits. The Hong Islands Sunset and Bioluminescent Planktons day leaves at 13:00 and does not bring you back until 19:30, about seven hours, and the half of it that happens after the sun goes down is the reason to book it rather than the standard daytime run. You still get the lagoon, the viewpoint and the snorkeling, but you get them in afternoon light with the day trippers already heading home, and then you get a sunset, a buffet dinner on an island, and a swim with glowing plankton. It runs from Krabi and Ao Nang on either a speedboat or a traditional longtail.

What the day looks like

The boat departs at 13:00. The order of the stops depends on tide and weather conditions, so treat what follows as the shape of the afternoon rather than a timetable.

Hong Island itself is the largest of the group, ringed by limestone cliffs with clear water for swimming and not much to do beyond relaxing, which is the point of it.

The 360 Degree Viewpoint is reached on treetop walkways and gives panoramic views back over the whole cluster of islands. It involves a climb, so if that is not for everyone in your group, tell us when you book.

Hong Lagoon is the enclosed body of water the islands are named for, walled in by cliffs and mangrove forest. The boat cruises in through the gap and the noise of the open sea drops away behind you.

Pakbia Island is a rocky island with a sandbar running out towards its neighbors, and Lao Lading Island is a scenic bay with a beach set against jungle. Snorkeling happens at coral reef locations around the islands, with equipment and life jackets provided.

Sunset is watched from Pakbia or from Koh Rai island. A mini buffet dinner with BBQ is served at an island location, and a halal option is available if you ask for it in advance.

Then it gets dark, and the boat moves to the plankton site near Ao Nang. Bioluminescent plankton give off light when the water around them is disturbed, so hands and feet leave glowing trails. Whether you see them, and how strongly, depends on the moon phase and the sea conditions on the night. You are back on shore around 19:30.

Who this trip suits

This suits people who have already done a morning island trip, or who would rather not spend the hottest hours on a boat. It suits couples and small groups who like the idea of eating dinner on a beach and swimming in the dark afterwards. Families come, and children aged four to eleven have their own price, but the after dark swim asks for children who are genuinely comfortable in the water at night. If you want the Hong Islands in bright midday light, our standard Hong Islands day trip is the better booking. If only the plankton interest you, the shorter Railay evening trip covers that on its own.

What to bring

Swimwear under your clothes and a towel. A dry change of clothes for the ride home, since you will be wet after the plankton swim and the evening air on a moving boat is cooler than the afternoon. A light layer or windbreaker for the same reason. A hat, sunglasses and reef-safe sunscreen for the daylight half, shoes you can climb in for the viewpoint, and sandals for the beaches. A dry bag for your phone is worth having. Snorkeling equipment, life jackets, bottled drinking water, fresh fruits, dinner, travel insurance and a guide are all included, so there is not much else to carry. Bring cash for the national park entrance fee, which is not included.

Good to know

The plankton are wild organisms and nobody controls them. Visibility depends on moon phase and sea conditions, and dark nights give the better odds while a bright moon washes the effect out. We will tell you honestly how your dates look rather than promise a display.

The itinerary order depends on tide and weather, and the program may change depending on conditions. That matters more here than on a daytime trip, because the boat is out past sunset.

Roughly November to April is the calm, clear stretch on this coast. May to October is the monsoon, when evenings are more variable.

Hotel transfer is included. This trip does not run on the fixed morning pickup window our early tours use, so we arrange your time with you directly.

The Koh Hong national park entrance fee is not included in the tour price. It is ฿300 per adult and ฿150 per child aged 4 to 11, charged per person.
