About this trip

The Khao Sok National Park Day Trip is the one day out we run from Krabi that turns its back on the sea. Instead of walking down to the beach at Ao Nang and stepping onto a boat, you travel inland by road into one of the oldest stretches of rainforest in southern Thailand. It is a full day of forest, water and limestone: a nature walk with a guide, a boat ride, and the same tall cliffs Krabi is known for, seen here rising out of jungle and lake rather than out of the Andaman Sea.

What the day looks like

The day begins with a morning pickup and a drive inland. The coast drops away behind you, the road runs on through rubber and oil palm, and after a while the limestone starts again on land, this time as long green ridges rather than islands scattered across the water.

Khao Sok National Park is the whole of the trip, and the park gives you rainforest, a lake and limestone cliffs in a single day. On foot, your guide sets a gentle pace and points out what is easy to walk straight past on your own: strangler figs wrapped around their hosts, bamboo, the marks left by animals that stay well out of sight, and the layered noise of insects and birds that fills the forest from morning onwards. Rainforest walking here is about detail rather than distance, so you do not need to be a hiker to enjoy it.

The boat ride takes you out onto the park's lake, Cheow Lan, a reservoir whose flooded valleys left the tops of the old ridges standing above the water as sheer green islands. From a boat the scale of those cliffs is far easier to read than it is from the shore, and the water is calm in a way that sea days rarely are. Lunch is included and eaten during the day, so you are not working around a restaurant stop.

In the later afternoon we drive back and drop you at your hotel. Exact timings shift with traffic and with how the day runs, so tell us if you have something booked for the evening and we will let you know whether it is realistic.

Who this trip suits

This one suits travelers who want a change of scene: couples on a longer stay, families with children old enough to walk for a while without complaint, photographers, and anyone more interested in forest and wildlife than in snorkeling. It is also a good choice on a day when the sea is rough, because almost none of it depends on open water. It is not the right trip if you want a beach, and it involves a fair amount of road time, worth knowing if anyone in your group travels badly by car.

What to bring

Light long sleeves and trousers are more comfortable in the forest than shorts, and shoes with grip are better than sandals on damp ground. Bring insect repellent, sun cream, a hat, a refillable water bottle, a rain layer at any time of year, and a dry bag or plastic sleeve for your camera and phone. Binoculars are a genuine luxury here, and cash is useful for drinks along the way.

Good to know

High season in Krabi runs roughly from November to April and the drier months make walking easier underfoot. The monsoon months, roughly May to October, bring heavier and more sudden rain, but they are also when the forest looks its best, and a shower usually passes rather than settling in for the day. Rainforest means humidity in every season, so plan on getting damp one way or the other.

The national park entrance fee is included in the tour price on this trip. Our island day trips charge it separately per person, so this is one fewer thing to work out before you come.
