About this trip
The Khao Sok 2 Days 1 Night Experience takes you inland from Krabi and keeps you there overnight. Rather than driving up, looking at the lake and driving home again in the dark, you stay out on the water in a floating bungalow, wake up inside the national park and get the two times of day that make Khao Sok worth the journey: dusk and first light. For anyone whose holiday so far has been Ao Nang and the islands, it shows a different side of southern Thailand.
What the day looks like
Day one starts with a pickup from your accommodation and a drive north out of Krabi. The sea disappears behind you, the road runs through plantation country, and then the limestone returns as long forested ridges. At the lake you transfer to a boat and head out across Khao Sok Lake, a reservoir where the drowned valleys left the old ridge tops standing above the water as steep green islands. The crossing is the moment most people stop talking and start taking photographs.
Your accommodation is on the lake itself, in floating bungalows tied against the cliffs with jungle scenery on every side. Afternoons here are unhurried. There is swimming straight off the raft, time on the water in a boat, and the light through the late afternoon does most of the work for you. Meals are included, so evening is simply dinner on the raft, and after dark the noise from the forest takes over completely.
Day two starts early, because early is when the lake is worth being awake for. Mist sits in the channels between the cliffs, the water is flat, and wildlife is more active than at any other hour, which is why the morning boat trip and the nature walk are put where they are. Your guide leads the walk into the forest at a gentle pace, reading the ground and the canopy for you. What you actually see is never guaranteed, which is the honest position for any wildlife experience.
After a final stretch on the lake and lunch we cross back, meet the vehicle and drive you to your hotel. Timings on both days depend on the road, the boat and the weather, so if you have an onward flight or a booking on day two, tell us before you commit and we will tell you whether it fits.
Who this trip suits
Couples, small groups of friends and travelers on a longer stay get the most out of this one, along with anyone who has done the island trips and wants something quieter. It works well for families with children who are comfortable around water and happy to sleep somewhere simple. It is not a luxury hotel experience: a floating bungalow is basic by design and connectivity is limited. If that sounds like a drawback rather than an attraction, the single day version will suit you better.
What to bring
Pack an overnight bag rather than your whole suitcase. Bring swimwear, a quick drying towel, light long sleeves and trousers for the forest, closed shoes with grip, insect repellent, sun cream, a hat and a torch or head torch. Add any medication you need, a rain layer whatever the season, a dry bag for phone and camera, and cash for drinks and extras.
Good to know
High season across Krabi and Khao Sok runs roughly from November to April, with drier days and easier walking. The monsoon months, roughly May to October, bring heavier rain, greener forest, fuller waterways and fewer people, and showers usually pass rather than settling in. Humidity is a constant in all seasons, and the lake can be cool and misty first thing in the morning, so one warm layer is not wasted.
The national park entrance fee is included in the trip price. Our island day trips charge the park fee separately per person, so this one is simpler to budget for.
