Ao Thalane
Mangrove forest and limestone canyon kayaking route.
About this trip
Mangrove Kayaking Half Day is a straightforward paddling trip at Ao Thalane, the sheltered bay north east of Ao Nang where the sea reaches inland between limestone cliffs. The route follows the mangrove forest and the limestone canyon, and there is a nature walk alongside the paddling. It is a half day, it is suitable for beginners, and it is the simplest version of Ao Thalane we run: kayak equipment, a guide and insurance, without the add-ons and combinations of the longer programmes.
What the day looks like
There is one location on this trip, Ao Thalane, and the whole half day happens there. Start times and transfer arrangements are confirmed when you book rather than fixed in advance, so tell us your hotel and we will let you know how the day will run for you.
At the launch point your guide fits the kayaks and the life jackets, which are provided, and explains how the paddling works and how the group stays together. Nothing here assumes you have done it before.
The paddling route runs through the mangrove forest first. Mangroves grow in the tidal margin, so what you see depends on the state of the water: at low tide the roots stand clear above the surface in a dense tangle, and at high tide you paddle in among the trees themselves. The channels are narrow and shaded and very quiet, and this section is the reason most people book the trip.
From the mangroves the route follows the limestone canyon. The karst cliffs at Ao Thalane come straight down into the water, and paddling along their base gives you a sense of scale you do not get from a road or a beach. The rock is undercut at the waterline in places, worn back by tide and time.
The nature walk is the second part of the programme. Mangroves are a coastal ecosystem rather than just scenery, a nursery for fish and crabs and a wall against storm surge, and walking a stretch of it gets you closer to that than paddling past does. Your guide will point out what is living in it.
The exact order of the paddling and the walk depends on the tide, which governs everything in a mangrove system. Your guide sets the route on the day.
Who this trip suits
This suits beginners. It is calm water paddling with life jackets provided and a guide with the group, and no previous experience is needed. It works for couples, for friends, and for families, with a child rate applying to ages four to eleven.
It also suits people who want a half day rather than a full one, and who would rather see one place properly than be moved between six. There is no island hopping, no open sea crossing and no long boat transfer involved.
If you want swimming, a sunset paddle, dinner, or a combination with ATV or elephant care, our longer Ao Thalane kayaking programmes cover those. This one is the plain version and is priced accordingly.
What to bring
Light clothes you do not mind getting wet in, and a change of clothes for afterwards. Sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses for the open water sections, and insect repellent for the mangrove channels, where the air is still and shaded. Closed shoes or sandals with a strap for the nature walk, since the ground in a mangrove is soft and often muddy. Bring drinking water. A camera is worth having, but keep it in something waterproof.
Good to know
Krabi high season runs roughly from November to April, when conditions are drier and more settled. The monsoon runs from May to October and brings more rain and less predictable weather. Mangrove paddling is sheltered by nature, but the tide and the weather still decide how a given day is run.
Kayak equipment, a guide and insurance are included, and life jackets are provided. Anything else, including transfer arrangements and start times, is confirmed at the time of booking, so ask us and we will tell you exactly what applies to your date rather than guess.
